You always hear that when the times gets closer for you to give birth, you should have your bag packed and ready to go. Labor is unpredictable and can start when you least expect it, so the last thing you want to think about while breathing through contractions is what to pack in your bag.
You want to be prepared for every possible situation, but the mistake most parents make is overpacking. So, to help you avoid digging through a pile of things in your suitcase just to find your toothbrush, here is an easy list of things to bring to the hospital.
- Clothes: You really only need one outfit for yourself, which is what you will go home in. You will be tired and not up to changing outfits during your stay. The hospital will give you plenty of gowns, which will be a lifesaver as you are learning to breastfeed. You will also want the outfit you go home in to be comfortable, especially if you end up with a C-section. I brought a loose cotton dress, and was very thankful for it.
- Toiletries: You will want to shower and brush your teeth before receiving visitors. The hospital will also provide you with soap, shampoo, and conditioner if you need it, but if you have your favorite at home, feel free to bring it.
- Baby Items: Your baby needs an outfit to go home in, and that is basically it. My baby stayed wrapped in her hospital blanket and the cap they provided the whole time we were in the hospital. The hospital also provides diapers and wipes, so you really do not need to bring much with you.
As you can see, there is not much you need to bring, and the hospital will provide most of what you need for your stay. Keep it simple, and save yourself time and stress.
